A brand-new outhouse now located on the Parking Lot-236 trail. It’s not only aesthetically pleasing, it has some neat features.

Welcome to the NLT Moldering Privy

DIRECTIONS for use:

Please PACK OUT TRASH, including all feminine hygiene products, food waste, paper, etc.

Do not use the privy for garbage disposal.

Do your business as you normally would. THROW IN A HANDFUL OF WOOD SHAVINGS WHEN YOU ARE DONE. Simply cover your deposit with a handful (about one cup) of shavings from the bag provided, or duff from the forest floor. Duff is preferred since it contains natural bacteria and fungus that aid the decomposition process but the shavings are adequate. Extra duff or shavings are discouraged because they will fill the moldering chamber prematurely. Please CLOSE THE LID to help keep odors and the flies down.

Please LATCH THE DOOR to keep the critters away.

In this privy, native soil microbes decompose the sewage in mesophilic (low temperature) and aerobic (using oxygen) conditions above the ground level. This is why the outhouse is elevated. Pathogens are reduced by bacterial and invertebrate competition. Peeing in the privy helps to maintain the necessary moisture balance to aid in decomposition. It is important to keep foreign objects out of the moldering chamber. Garbage is disruptive to the chamber and makes for some unpleasant “fishing” for our volunteers.

Thank You

This is the best time of year to get some work in. We appreciate everyone who pitched-in and helped to organize!

From Member, Steve Jenks:

Troop 41 from Champlain NY and Troop 66 of West Plattsburgh NY didcommunity service at the New Land Trust. 17 Young men and 11 adults, prepared wood for Luke’s Lodge, redirected part of the Linker trail, removed huge rocks between the 2 bridges on Linker, added a bridge on the new Ninja trail, and opened 2 stone walls for better accessibility for skiing and snowshoeing. They also added a grill to the fire pit at Luke’ Lodge. Special thanks to these local scout troops for their help.

Juliette Girl Scouts of Saranac NY built bluebird houses, dug holes, put up posts and installed 3 new houses on the New land Trust. They can be seen in the Meadows area. Pictured are Amelia Jenks, Lexi Haley, and Samantha Airele.

For Immediate Release

1500 Morrisonville, Peru, and Saranac Central elementary students to receive trees donated by the New Land Trust located in Saranac, NY.

Saranac, NY, April 3, 2009 – Members of the New Land Trust will conduct a tree-planting on Sunday, April 19, 2009 beginning at 10am at 236 Plumadore Rd, Saranac, NY. The tree-planting and donation is part of the New Land Trust’s celebration of Earth Day 2009. The public is welcome to attend. Local elementary students in Morrisonville, Peru, and Saranac Central will receive trees from the New Land Trust. The importance of trees and their care will be a focus of educational activities and 1500 seedlings will be distributed to students for planting.

The tree-planting ceremony recognizes 30 years of ownership by the New Land Trust of 287 acres of land located within the Adirondack Forest Preserve and in the town of Saranac, NY. Trees are one of the most commonplace features in our environment, yet their beneficial role in making our communities and rural landscapes are often under-appreciated. Trees make our environments more liveable and pleasant, and also provide clean air and habitat for wildlife.

According to New Land Trust member Kathy Cantwell, “We hope that learning about trees and participating in an Earth Day activity will help connect our children to nature, educate them about forest stewardship.” “At the same time, we hope to educate the students and families about local natural resources and recreational opportunities in their own backyard.”

The 1500 seedlings were purchased by the New Land Trust from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation’s Saratoga Tree Nursery with the assistance of private donations. Support for the program is still being accepted, please contact Douglas Yu at doug@newlandtrust.org for further information.

ABOUT NEW LAND TRUST – Founded in 1978, the New Land Trust was a cooperative effort by a group of SUNY Plattsburgh students to preserve a piece of local land forever. Today the NLT is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, supported by membership donations, and dedicated to preservation, recreation, and education. The 287-acre property is open to the public, membership is not required. For more information: www.NewLandTrust.org
